Find a local Realtor you can trust to help you with a short sale. Ask them how many successful short sales they've done, ask for references for past clients, and ask them to recommend a couple of options for attorneys to consult with before signing any listing agreement. The bank won't reach out and tell you to short sale; it's up to you to take initiative here. First, let me say that I am sorry about your situation. There are far too many homeowners in a similar situation these days.
Next, I suggest that you meet with a local Realtor who has had substantial short sale experience to talk about potential options. There is quite a bit to discuss. Also, and very important, you need to find out about possible ramifications from potential tax liability due to forgiven debt and you need to check into the possibility of your lender pursuing you for any possible deficiency. In other words, appointments with an attorney and a tax advisor who are familiar with short sale and foreclosures are very important.
